BSN Round 8: Cariduros beat Gigantes by one after a very close game

Sixth-ranked Gigantes (1-5) were very close to win a game against first ranked Cariduros (5-2) in Fajardo on Saturday. Cariduros managed to secure only one-point victory 71-70. However their fans expected much easier game. Cariduros looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American forward Davon Jefferson (203-1986, college: USC) saved the victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. International forward Emmanuel Andujar (197-1993, college: Manhattan) contributed with 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American forward Justin Tillman (203-1996, college: VCU) replied with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds for Gigantes. Gigantes' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Cariduros maintains first position with 5-2 record, which they share with Bayamon. Gigantes lost third consecutive game. They keep the sixth place with five games lost. Cariduros is looking forward to face Mets (#3) in Guaynabo in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Gigantes will play on the road against Grises in Humacao and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Fifth-ranked Brujos (2-5) were very close to win a game against first ranked Piratas (7-1) in Quebradillas. Piratas managed to secure only one-point victory 82-81. However their fans expected much easier game. Worth to mention a great performance of American Thomas Robinson (208-1991, college: Kansas) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points, 20 rebounds and 5 assists and Carlos Emory who added 21 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Naturalized American swingman Jahvari Josiah (193-1993, college: Coppin St., agency: Green Sports Management) responded with 23 points and 6 rebounds. Piratas have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 7-1 record. Brujos lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth place with five games lost. Piratas will play against Cangrejeros (#4) in Santurce in the next round. Brujos will play at home against Atleticos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Santurce between Leones and Cangrejeros. Second ranked Leones (7-2) got a very close victory on the road over 4th ranked Cangrejeros (4-6). Leones managed to escape with a 2-point win 96-94 on Saturday evening. The winners were led by Jarrell Brantley who had that evening a double-double by scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds. Leones' coach Wilhelmus Caanen used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Even 31 points by Gian Clavell did not help to save the game for Cangrejeros. Leones maintains second position with 7-2 record having just 2 victories less than leader Quebradillas. Cangrejeros at the other side keep the fourth place with six games lost. Leones will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Cangrejeros will play against the league's leader Piratas (#1) in Quebradillas and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: Arecibo were beaten by Mayaguez on the road 96-90. Guaynabo won against Humacao on its own court 91-85. Bayamon managed to outperform San German in a road game 97-83. Santurce lost to defending champion Arecibo at home 84-93. Guaynabo was crushed by Mayaguez on the opponent's court 76-102.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 14 points and 14 rebounds by Marvin Jones of Ponce.

There was a small surprise when sixth ranked Indios (3-7) beat one of their biggest challengers Capitanes (5-4) in Mayaguez 96-90 on Saturday. Indios made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Strangely Capitanes outrebounded Indios 43-29 including a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by American power forward Terrence Jones (206-1992, college: Kentucky) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import point guard Dwight Buycks (191-1989, college: Marquette) supported him with 21 points. Even a double-double of 15 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists by Nigerian-American power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-1987, college: Texas A&M) did not help to save the game for Capitanes. Dominican Victor Liz (193-1986) added 29 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Four Indios and five Capitanes players scored in double figures. Indios have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with San German. Defending champion Capitanes keep the third position with four games lost. Rather expected game when 5th ranked Grises (2-3) lost to third ranked Mets (4-4) in Guaynabo 85-91 on Saturday. Mets made 26-of-28 free shots (92.9 percent) during the game, while Grises only scored four points from the stripe. They outrebounded Grises 31-18 including a 21-10 advantage in defensive rebounds. Vaqueros dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Atleticos' 40. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. The winners were led by the former international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-1992, college: Miami, FL) who had that evening a triple-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists and American-Dominican forward Angel Nunez (203-1991, college: S.Florida) supported him with 23 points and 5 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field).
